The final major of the 2014 LPGA season kicks off this week in Evian Les Bains, France and there is more on the line than just a major title. The first ever winner of the Rolex Annika Major Award will be decided on Sunday at The Evian Championship. The award will honour the player who has the most outstanding record in the five major championship during a current LPGA Tour season and in order to take home the award, a player must win one of those major championships.
Michelle Wie currently leads the standings with 84 points following her victory at the U.S. Women’s Open and her runner-up finish at the Kraft Nabisco Championship. Wie is slated to be back in action this week for the first time since early August. The four-time LPGA winner has been side lined for close to five weeks with a stress reaction in the index finger of her right hand. But Wie has plenty of competition for the award. Sitting just 10 points behind Wie is Rolex Rankings No. 2 Inbee Park, who recently won the Wegmans LPGA Championship, and Lexi Thompson sits in third with 68 points.
This year’s RICOH Women’s British Open winner, Mo Martin, will not be in the field in Evian due to a thumb injury she has been battling in recent weeks. While Wie, Park and Thompson have already put themselves in contention for the award with a major victory this season, there are a few other players who could etch their name as the inaugural winner with a victory at The Evian Championship. Stacy Lewis, Shanshan Feng, Suzann Pettersen and Brittany Lincicome are all in the running for this prestigious honour.
