Teenager Anna Huang followed up her flawless first round with a bogey-free 66 (-6) on day two of La Sella Open in Spain.
The Canadian began the day leading the tournament and teed it up in the final group of the day at La Sella Golf Resort.
Huang, who started from the 10th tee, rolled in her first birdie of the day on 12 before another on 13, and she had a tap-in birdie on 18 to make the turn in -3.
The 16-year-old continued her consistent form rolling in a birdie on the fourth and she added two more on the seventh and the ninth to lead by three strokes with a total of 14-under-par.
“Today was really good, just as yesterday was,” said the LET rookie. “I think my ball striking these past two days was really good and I’m bogey-free so far – that’s a new record for me. Being bogey-free definitely takes the pressure off, being able to hit fairways and greens is the most important thing out here because the rough is pretty challenging.
“The middle of the round on my ninth and 10th holes, it got pretty windy out there, but I played with the wind and not against it and used it to my advantage. I’m trying not to think about winning because I don’t want any added pressure. I’m going to play my own game and not think about the scoreboard too much.
“Being in the final group tomorrow is going to be first for me and I think I have a good group tomorrow, so I’m really excited for that. I have never played with Shannon [Tan] before, but I really like how she plays so I’m really excited.”
France’s Nastasia Nadaud sits in solo second place on 11-under-par after a round of 67 (-5) on day two at La Sella.
The 20-year-old started with a bogey at the first but then rolled in back-to-back birdies on three and four before adding further birdies on six and nine.
Nadaud made another birdie on 12 and dropped her second shot of the day at the 13th but finished in style with a chip-in birdie at 17 and another birdie at 18 to be three shots behind the leader.
“It’s been a great day today,” said the Frenchwoman. “I started off pretty bad having that three-putt on the first missing a two-foot putt but made it back with birdies on two and three. I got back into it, rolled in a couple of putts and that chip-in birdie on 17 was definitely a highlight and birdied 18 as well, so a nice way to finish.
“It was a pretty windy afternoon. The wind was switching in the trees especially on the back nine from 10-18. It wasn’t really easy, but I managed to get through it and have a couple of birdies coming in.
“It definitely helps having Michele [Thomson] on the bag. She knows what a player expects and she is also from Scotland, so is used to the wind and knows better than me how to play into wind or downwind. It’s a good advantage.
“Nutella pizza is my guilty pleasure this week. Yesterday, I went by the pool and just ordered a Nutella pizza and it’s so good.”
Singapore’s Shannon Tan is in outright third place on seven-under-par after a round of 68 (-4) which included one dropped shot and five birdies.
“Today was quite boring golf, I did hit quite a few fairways and a lot of greens, so that makes it easier out here,” said the two-time LET winner. “It got a bit windy at some points in the round, but I was hitting it well today so that paid off.
“I hit 14 greens yesterday. It felt like I only hit 12 but after doing my stats I realised I hit 14 which was more than I thought. I was putting well yesterday, so that made up for the worse ball striking and today better ball striking and average putting.
“I am happy with the past two days and the way I have played. Overall, I’m focused on giving it my best and just having fun this week. We have been hosted really well and I think all the players really enjoy this week, so tomorrow I will go out with the same game plan. I want to have fun out there, hit fairways and greens and hope the putts drop.”
Spain’s Nuria Iturrioz and Australia’s Kirsten Rudgeley share fourth place at the midway mark on six-under-par.
Iturrioz, who won the inaugural La Sella Open in 2023, fired a round of 66 (-6) which included a run of five birdies in a row.
“Yesterday, I missed some putts on the greens but today I felt great,” said the 2025 Aramco Houston Championship winner. “I hit really good shots from the tee with the driver and the irons also because I was on the fairways, so it was better than being in the rough. I made good putts on one to six and I am happy.
“I’m really happy to be here. It’s a course I really like, it’s true the grass isn’t my favourite type of grass, but I think every year they improve the course a lot. I feel great because I’m playing well the past weeks but it’s going to be a long week.
“I’m trying to do the same. I will be more tired than I was in Houston, but I’m trying to be calm and this afternoon I’m going to enjoy some tapas in the city.”
Australia’s Rudgeley went bogey-free on day two making birdies on the third, fourth, seventh, eighth and 11th holes to be T4.
“It was a really cruisey round of golf,” said Rudgeley. “I could have driven the ball a bit better, but I missed in the correct areas. I putted nicely. Me and my caddie Fabio are working well together, so we’ll keep walking around and enjoying it.
“I actually found it pretty difficult in the afternoon yesterday with the wind. It was pretty swirly and I felt like it quite strong. The shots into the green especially with how grainy the greens are, it made it a bit more difficult.
“I have found little bits of my game that I have done well and bits that I haven’t done well, so once I get all of those together then hopefully it will all pan out. There’s definitely some parts of my golf that need to be better, but we will keep watching and see what happens.”
Four players are in a share of sixth place with Italy’s Alessandra Fanali, Slovenia’s Pia Babnik, Australia’s Maddison Hinson-Tolchard and Wales’ Lydia Hall all on five-under-par.
One shot further back are the quartet of Ireland’s Lauren Walsh, Italy’s Alessia Nobilio, Sweden’s Kajsa Arwefjäll and England’s Amy Taylor in T10.
The cut fell at +2 with 61 players making it through to the weekend action at La Sella Golf Resort.
Round three will begin at 8.30 am (local time) on Saturday with the leaders teeing off at 12.41 pm (local time).
