High winds wreak havoc in Tenerife

(Buenavista del Norte, Tenerife, May 1 2004) Saturday’s third round of the Ladies Tenerife Open was suspended until 0815 on Sunday morning as high winds and stormy weather wreaked havoc at Buenavista Golf Club in the north of the island.

One shot further adrift on three under par is last year’s winner Elisabeth Esterl from Germany, who has played nine holes, and the 2003 runner up Becky Brewerton who rattled off six straight pars in the worst of the conditions.

Four players are tied on two under par including Stephanie Arricau from France, Anne-Marie Knight from Australia and Spaniards Nuria Clau and Emma Cabrera.

Andy Lott, the Director of Tournament Operations explained the decision to suspend play:

“Most of the morning playing conditions were borderline and the winds increased in strength so much that the golf ball would not stay still on the putting surfaces. We had to suspend play twice before making the decision to come back in the morning to resume the third round,” said Lott.

“I envisage we will be able to finish the third round tomorrow and then I will make the decision about the final round. I have some options such as starting from two tees to keep the event as a scheduled 72-hole competition, however, there is little anyone can do about the weather.”
