Alice Hewson fired a bogey-free 67 (-5) on Friday at the Volvo Car Scandinavian Mixed to post the low female round of the day and jump up the leaderboard in Sweden.
Teeing off in the afternoon, and flirting with the cut line after shooting a 72 (level par) on Thursday, the Englishwoman made a hot start at Ullna Golf Club when she birdied the short par-3 second hole.
A solid stretch of pars then saw Hewson go out in 35 (-1) before the 25-year-old fired up the flat stick on the back nine, birdieing the 12th, 14th, and 15th before a sensational approach on the 18th set up red number five of the day.
“I just played really really solid today,” she said. “I hit a lot of fairways and a lot of greens, had a lot of opportunities. I still left a few out there on the greens which is really encouraging going into the weekend. But overall really solid golf.”
Posting the low round of the day from any Ladies European Tour (LET) player in the co-sanctioned event, Hewson now catapults herself into T13 having started proceedings in T67.
“I feel like we’re getting to know the golf course really well now,” Hewson continued, who finished as the highest-ranked LET player in the inaugural Scandinavian Mixed event in 2021. “There are some really hard holes out there for us, so it’s all about navigating ourselves through those and taking advantage of holes where we do have a bit of an opportunity.
“We’ll stick to the game plan and try and give ourselves as many opportunities as we can.”
France’s Emma Grechi is tied with Hewson as the top LET player in Sweden after shooting a 70 (-2) on Thursday.
England’s Dale Whitnell leads the way on 17-under-par after firing a magnificent course record 61 (-11) in Stockholm.
