Historic milestone for a great young talent and for German golf: Helen Briem ends her impressive time as an amateur at the sporting summit and switches to the pros as number one in the world amateur rankings. The 18-year-old from Stuttgart’s GC Solitude has racked up success after success in recent months alongside her A-level exams, leaving even her rivals from the established US colleges behind her, who regularly meet in high-scoring competitions.
Briem broke into the top five of the world rankings at the beginning of this year by winning the Portuguese International Ladies Amateur Championship. Strong results in her first two starts on the Ladies European Tour (11th place at the Amundi German Masters, 2nd place at the Dormy Open Helsingborg) and, above all, her three consecutive victories in the LET Access Series laid the foundation for her leap to the top of the world rankings. This then became a reality when she won the European Women’s Team Championship in Spain last week.
The current greatest talent in German golf has not only won titles but also set numerous records. Her hat-trick of titles at the LET Access is a sensation that no other player has achieved before her. At the same time, she equaled the record for the lowest round (ten-under-par) in Tour history.
Helen Briem: “I’m incredibly happy”
“I’m incredibly excited about this new challenge and the many trips to places that I can now get to know,” says Briem. “My goal is to gain a foothold on the big stage of world golf, to be part of the Solheim Cup at some point and to represent Germany at the Olympic Games.” First, however, the 1.90 metre tall Swabian wants to make the final leap on the LET and establish herself there.
The switch to the professional ranks is another chapter in an already historic career for the exceptional athlete, who is known for her impressive driving distance of more than 250 metres. Her outstanding CV highlights include victories at the 2021 European Young Masters at the age of 15, the 2022 World Amateur Championship (including third place in the team), the 2021 & 2023 PING Junior Solheim Cup, the 2023 Junior Ryder Cup and the 2023 R&A Girls Amateur Championship as the first German ever.
Manager Reimbold: “Helen’s development is breathtaking”
“We are very happy to be able to accompany Helen on her journey in the future,” says manager Christian Reimbold, Managing Director of U.COM Player GmbH. “Her development is breathtaking. At just 18 years old, she has already proven herself impressively at the very highest level. Her move to the professional ranks is a milestone for our sport and will undoubtedly inspire many young talents.”
