HEDWALL HOPING TO KICK ON AFTER SOLHEIM CUP BOOST

Caroline Hedwall

Caroline Hedwall believes her game is in good stead and proved that to herself after an outstanding comeback in her singles match at the 2023 Solheim Cup.

The Swedish star was 3 down in her match against Ally Ewing with six holes to play but was able to turn it around at Finca Cortesin in Spain.

After holing a monster putt on the 16th to bring the match back to all square, Hedwall won the 17th and 18th holes to defeat Ewing 2 Up and secure a crucial point for Europe as they retained the trophy.

“It was just a great Sunday,” said the Swede, who was playing in her fifth Solheim Cup. “They’re going to be memories for life, it gave me a really good feel about my game and what I can do on the course when I’m on. It’s great memories.

“I feel like I have the game, but I just haven’t really put it into good scoring this year and it proved to myself again that I definitely have the game. Hopefully, I can try to bring it out for the end of the season.”

After being part of an historic moment for Team Europe, as they secured the Solheim Cup for the third time in a row for the first time ever, Hedwall had a week off.

The seven-time LET winner headed to Rome on Friday for a little bit of a holiday and to watch the Ryder Cup.

She explained: “I went down there on Friday morning, did some sightseeing in Rome – I have never been there before, then watched the Ryder Cup on the weekend. It was awesome, a great atmosphere.

“It’s definitely different walking on the side and there’s so many people you don’t get to watch that much live golf, but it’s just atmosphere that I wanted to feel. I was sitting on the grandstand on number one for the afternoon pairings on Saturday and it was just awesome.”

Hedwall is one of 84 professionals teeing it up at this week’s Aramco Team Series presented by PIF – Hong Kong.

The format sees two competitions happening side-by-side with a 54-hole Individual stroke play for the pros, as well as the 36-hole Team competition.

Hong Kong Golf Club is the venue and the 34-year-old from Taby is looking forward to teeing it up in the warmer conditions.

“I love the team format, it’s a lot of fun,” she added. “I haven’t played for a couple of days because of being in Rome and travelling here, but I’m going to try and find it now and hopefully I’ll be ready for Friday.

“I have only had a layover in Hong Kong before. I’m fairly used to the weather conditions by now, we come to places now and then where it’s hot and humid. I feel like I can cope with it.

“At the end of the season, it’s quite nice when it’s actually warm. I’m getting older, I prefer the heat rather than the cold. It just makes the body more flexible. It’s always nice being in warm weather.”
