The Ladies European Tour (LET) returns to Ireland this week for the KPMG Women’s Irish Open – the 21st stop on the schedule.
Last year the tournament returned after a ten-year hiatus and it’s the second time that it will be played at the picturesque Dromoland Castle.
Before the tournament gets underway, here are a few points to look out for…
Defending champion back in town
Klara Davidson Spilkova secured victory via a dramatic playoff at last year’s KPMG Women’s Irish Open and she returns to Dromoland Castle this week.
A birdie on 16 followed by a great up-and-down on 17 for par and another birdie on 18 was enough for her to be in the playoff alongside Ursula Wikstrom and Nicole Broch Estrup.
The Czech star rolled in her birdie putt to capture her second LET title and has hopes of retaining her crown in Ireland.
Home favourites ready
Leona Maguire will be teeing it up once again at the KPMG Women’s Irish Open after she finished in a tie for fourth place in 2022.
The world number 17 will be hoping to improve on her performance from last year where she produced rounds of 67-75-65-68 at Dromoland Castle.
Alongside Maguire, there will also be seven Irish amateurs teeing it up this week including Aine Donegan.
Chance to make a Race to Costa del Sol move
With 20 events of the 2023 LET season complete, the Tour is on the home stretch and there’s all to play for in the rankings.
Diksha Dagar and Klara Davidson Spilkova are the best-ranked players teeing it up on the Race to Costa del Sol this week, as they sit in fifth and sixth place, respectively.
There is ample opportunity for players to make a move up the rankings this week with 500 points on offer for the winner.
Books for Birdies
A great initiative is taking place this week at the KPMG Women’s Irish Open called the KPMG Books for Birdies campaign.
It will see one children’s book donated by KPMG to local communities near the Dromoland area for every birdie recorded by Leona Maguire and every player at this year’s KPMG Women’s Irish Open.
Through this initiative, KPMG expects to donate over €20,000 worth of children’s books to local schools in nearby Newmarket-on-Fergus and a number of DEIS schools in and around Dromoland Castle, Co Clare.
