After an entertaining week at the Aramco Team Series Presented by PIF – London the Ladies European Tour (LET) heads to sunny Spain for the La Sella Open.
Debuting as a new tournament this year with big prize money on offer, 126 players from 25 nations will be vying for the trophy in the sixteenth event of the 2023 LET season.
Before the event gets underway at La Sella Golf & Spa Resort, here are a few talking points to look out for…
Super Spaniards in-form
The Spanish fans always bring the noise on the LET and they should have plenty to cheer about this week with several of their star players returning home in red hot form.
Leading the charge is Ana Pelaez Trivino, who now sits top of the Race to Costa del Sol thanks to a brilliant first half of the season which has included three runner-up finishes.
Alongside her is Carmen Alonso, who made all the headlines two weeks ago at the Ladies Open by Pickala Rock Resort when she finally secured her maiden victory on the LET after 19 years on Tour.
Three-time LET winner Nuria Iturrioz will also be one to watch as she eyes a return to the winners’ circle. The Spaniard has only missed one cut this season and arrives in Alicante off the back of her best result of 2023 – a T6 finish in London.
Big money on offer
It’s all to play for at La Sella with one of the biggest purses on offer throughout the 2023 season.
Staged just one week before the Amundi Evian Championship, players will be competing towards their share of a €1 million prize fund, with the winner taking home €150,000.
Awesome amateurs
Alongside the before-mentioned stars, four Spanish amateurs will also be hoping to put on a show for the home fans as they tee up as invitees this week.
With two top-5 finishes on the LET to her name already, both in her homeland of Spain in 2022 at the Madrid Ladies Open and Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España, Cayetana Fernandez is the standout here with the 18-year-old currently ranked third in the Women’s World Amateur Golf Rankings.
Joining her is the trio of Carla Bernat, Julia Lopez Ramirez, and Andrea Revuelta, the latter already a winner on the Santander Golf Tour.
Nordqvist hunting a hat-trick
Away from the home charge, three-time Major winner Anna Nordqvist tops the field this week as she chases a third victory at La Sella Golf Resort & Spa on the LET.
A five-time winner in Europe, Nordqvist recorded back-to-back victories at this week’s venue in 2010 and 2011 at the European Nations Cup alongside compatriot Sophie Gustafson.
Back in Europe ahead of a big summer of golf, the Swede will be hopeful she can once again produce the goods on a course she knows all too well.
Major preparation
Last but not least, a host of LET stars will be using this tournament as the perfect tuner for next week’s Amundi Evian Championship in France.
Having played their way into the fourth Major of 2023 thanks to a terrific past 12 months, Johanna Gustavsson, Meghan MacLaren, Klara Davidson Spilkova, Diksha Dagar, Lily May Humphreys, and Celine Herbin are all in the field this week, joining Nordqvist, Pelaez and Alonso as the nine players hoping to have an impactful couple of weeks.
