Anna Nordqvist, Catriona Matthew, Suzann Pettersen, Caroline Hedwall and Azahara Munoz are the five survivors from Europe’s Solheim Cup victory at Killeen Castle two years ago. And they intend to stage a repeat of the Irish thrills at Colorado.
“I think that Killeen Castle showed us that you must never give up,” said Nordqvist. “Suzann stepped up and made the last couple of groups believe in themselves and believe they could win their points.”
Matthew played a huge part in the win two years ago, undefeated in four matches. “I’m sure this time is going to be really exciting,” said the Scot.
“It’s all going to come down to the form on the greens. I love the Solheim. This is my seventh and I think you relax and enjoy it even more every time.”
Giulia Sergas is the oldest rookie and the 33-year-old Italian reckons she has a secret weapon. “I live at altitude in the mountains in Cortina so I am used to the conditions,” she said. “I love it.”
For Karine Icher, it is a second Solheim – the first was way back in 2002. “I feel like a rookie again,” joked the French 34-year-old.
Jodi Ewart-Shadoff is another newcomer and the English player has shown fine form in the majors this year, with top ten finishes at both the Kraft Nabisco Championship and the US Women’s Open.
“It was an honour to be picked,” said the Captain’s wild card. “This was my No.1 goal the last couple of years and to finally achieve it was really special. Now that I’m here it’s quite surreal.”
