Rising Swedish star Julia Engström is looking forward to making her first appearance at the Ladies European Thailand Championship this week. Julia has made a great start to her debut season on the LET and is currently number one on the Rookie of the Year rankings. We caught up with her ahead of the tournament which tees off at Phoenix Gold in Pattaya tomorrow ….
What do you think of the Phoenix Gold Golf & Country Club course?
I like it. The grass is very different to what we are use to back in Europe but I like it. The greens are very good, they are fast and pretty firm. I think the layout is fun because like on the par-5s there are opportunities to attack and go for them in two or layup. It’s very well thought out.
What are your goals for the week?
My game is pretty good right now but it is always different when you get out on the course in the tournament. I haven’t really set a goal and am focusing on just taking one shot at a time. I think it is one of those courses where you really need to think your way round.
You are still leading the Rookie of the Year rankings. What would it mean to you to win it?
It would mean a lot to win it because it was one of my goals at the start of the season. It’s always good to make a great start to your professional career. There are a lot of good players so we will see how it turns out.
What do you love about Thailand?
It’s my first time here and I really like it. The people are so polite and friendly, they are always asking how you are. I really like the country and love the weather.
Have you got any plans away from the course this week?
We went out to a really good Swedish restaurant in Pattaya. We watched the Sweden Vs South Korea World Cup game and we won with a great penalty. I am definitely going to get a Thai massage to relax.
