Leona Maguire got off to an excellent start at the 2025 ISPS HANDA Women’s Scottish Open making an eagle on her opening hole at Dundonald Links.
On the first day of competition, the Irish star began on the par-4 10th tee and made an eagle two to put herself at the top of the leaderboard.
The Irish star holed out from the fairway with her 9-iron to get off to the hottest of starts in calm and sunny conditions in Scotland.
“I couldn’t really ask for a better start,” she said. “I holed out with a 9-iron on 10, which was our first hole today, and it was pretty much perfect conditions for most of the front nine. I tried to take advantage of that as much as I could.
“It’s always a bonus when those shots go in and I hit the flag even on 18 as well with my pitch in. My approach is nicely dialled and first week with a new caddie. He was joking, he might as well have walked in after the first hole, but it was a nice start to the week.”
Maguire, who became the first Irish winner on the LET last year, made birdies at 17, the first and second holes to seal a bogey-free round of 67 (-5).
The LET winner is also working with caddie Phil ‘Wobbly’ Morbey and believes he brings a lot of experience.
After the morning wave, the Solheim Cup winner was in a share for the lead alongside Japan’s Rio Takeda, Spain’s Nuria Iturrioz and England’s Lottie Woad.
“I think you never mind being one of the first out on links,” she continued. “I always try and take advantage of the more benign conditions where you can. I took advantage of them and will try and build on the momentum tomorrow.
“I had obviously been playing well coming into the Irish Open and it was a busy week and I was a bit tired, but I suppose the energy of the crowd spurred me on as well. I tried to ride the momentum coming off Evian last week.
“[On her caddie] He was working for Thorbjørn [Olesen], who is also at my management company, and just set it up. He’s a legend of the game. He’s caddied for some big players.
“I have big shoes to fill, but it’s nice to have his expertise and experience on the bag. It’s his first time on the women’s Tour, so still a little bit of a learning adjustment for both of us, but I think we handled it pretty well day one.”
