Davies hoping to break the French connection

(Sant Cugat, Barcelona October 2 2004) Karine Icher from France retained her lead heading into Sunday’s final round of the €180,000 Catalonia Ladies Masters after posting a second round three under par 66 to tack on to her opening 62 at Club de Golf Sant Cugat.

Gwladys Nocera

“It was so awesome to be able to play with Laura, I grew up watching her playing on the television and reading about her in magazines and to play so well makes it all so much better,” grinned Nocera, who is in her second year as a professional.

“I struggled with my game a little in the middle of the round with three putts at the 14th and 15th but to finish with an eagle like that was really nice. I’m really excited about tomorrow now and I hope that I can do my best and we will see what happens.”

Davies will be looking to beat the French connection to earn her 67th career victory and she knows Icher well from The Solheim Cup in 2002. And after playing with Nocera for the first time, Davies was impressed and knows she will have to shoot low to have a chance of winning.

“Gwladys played very well today and was very impressive,” admitted Davies, who turns 41 next week. “I had never played with her before and she was a very good ball striker.”

Davies has accomplished the mission she came to Barcelona for, to win the LET rankings and on Sunday, hopes to cap it off with a win.

“First and foremost we came here to win the order of merit and the massive bonus was to have a chance to win. I’m playing well enough and if things go my way tomorrow I could shoot seven or eight under. It’s that kind of course. But you could also play very similar golf and shoot three or four over, so it’s a very tricky course…fun though!”

Also well in contention is the home favourite Paula Marti, who is just five shots back in a tie with Australian Nadina Taylor.
