CRUNCH TIME FOR SOLHEIM CUP HOPEFULS

This week’s AIG Women’s Open is the final qualification event for the 2024 European and United States Solheim Cup teams.

The European Team will comprise the top two players in the European Solheim Cup Team points standings, the top six players in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings not already eligible, and four captain’s picks.

With her second-place finish at the ISPS Handa Women’s Scottish Open, Esther Henseleit moved into the second automatic qualifying spot behind Charley Hull on the European Solheim Cup Team points standings.

As of today, the six Rolex Rankings qualifiers for the European Team are Celine Boutier (No. 8), Maja Stark (No. 24), Linn Grant (No. 26), Leona Maguire (No. 32), Carlota Ciganda (No. 33) and Madelene Sagstrom (No. 35). The next two players just outside the cut-off are Georgia Hall (No. 40) and Anna Nordqvist (No. 66) (below).

The European Solheim Cup team will be finalised when European Captain Suzann Pettersen names her four captain’s picks live on Sky Sports News at 4pm BST on Monday, 26th August.

The announcement will also be available to watch live on the LET website and YouTube channel.

This is also the final qualification tournament for the United States Solheim Cup team. The U.S. Team will comprise the top seven players in the U.S. Solheim Cup points standings, the top two players in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings not already eligible, and three captain’s picks. The team will be finalised following the AIG Women’s Open and US Team Captain Stacy Lewis will name her three picks on Tuesday, 27th August, at 4pm BST.

Lauren Coughlin won last week’s ISPS Handa Women’s Scottish Open, her second win in a month span, to clinch her spot on the U.S. Solheim Cup Team. Coughlin moved past Ally Ewing into third in the U.S. Solheim Cup Team points standings, behind Nelly Korda and Lilia Vu. The fifth, sixth and seventh spots are currently occupied by Allisen Corpuz, Megan Khang and Andrea Lee.

As of today, the two Rolex Rankings qualifiers for the U.S. Team are Rose Zhang (No. 9) and Alison Lee (No. 25). The next two players are Angel Yin (No. 34) and Lexi Thompson (No. 43).

Only players in eighth through 12th in the U.S. Solheim Cup Team points standings can move into the final automatic berth, currently held by Andrea Lee. Those five players – Rose Zhang, Alison Lee, Sarah Schmelzel, Jennifer Kupcho and Angel Yin – are all in the AIG Women’s Open field.
