Consistency the key for Stacy Lee Bregman

To some extent, Stacy Lee Bregman has lived in the shadow of players like Lee-Anne Pace and Ashleigh Simon. While this may be the case, it’s not to say she can’t produce tournament winning golf.

She certainly has belief in her ability and reckons she has more than a decent chance of winning the South African Women’s Open even though she’s never played Selborne Park before.

It’s possible that this could be to her advantage. “My expectation is to have a great week, have fun and enjoy playing again on home soil,” she said.

She’s had a fairly good year so far on the Ladies European Tour, with four top 20 finishes in eight starts. Her best result, a tie for 6th, only a month ago at the Deutsche Bank Ladies Swiss Open, earning her a cool €17,062.50 and pushing her season earnings to €32,072.97. “It’s been very consistent,” she said. And that could be the key to victory on the tight Selborne layout.

“This is the first time I am playing Selborne. I have no doubt that it will be a fantastic venue.”

She has a previous second place finish in a SA Open so the pressure shouldn’t faze her too much.

“I feel like my game is getting better and better every year and that there’s no aspect of it holding me back,” she said.

That said, she admitted to being something of a perfectionist in her approach.

“I have a positive attitude towards the game and don’t have a sense of entitlement. I work hard to get things,” she said.

She draws inspiration from perhaps an unlikely source, in legendary American athlete Jesse Owens.

She likes this quote: ‘We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication and discipline.’

Of that there’s no doubt, especially in golf. Stacy has put in some extremely hard work and it could be her lifting the trophy on Sunday evening.
