COLLEGE STAR IN THE MIX AFTER SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER ADVICE

From rubbing shoulders with the world’s best to being in the mix on her Ladies European Tour (LET) debut, Portuguese amateur Sofia Barroso Sá is truly having a fortnight she will never forget.

Just two weeks ago, the 21-year-old was given an invite to play in the pro-am at the Charles Schwab Challenge on the PGA Tour, teeing up alongside none other than three-time Major winner, Olympic Golf Medallist Scottie Scheffler.

Fast forward a fortnight and Barroso Sá, a college star at Texas Christian University (TCU), is now reaping the rewards of Scheffler’s advice as she contents at the Tenerife Women’s Open.

The Portuguese amateur said: “I got an invitation from the President of Charles Schwab to play, he saw me playing in the collegiate finals. I made it into the NCAA Championships as an individual. I think he was following me and invited me to in the pro-am. I got to play the first nine holes with Davis Riley, the past champion from 2024, and the second nine with Scottie Scheffler.

“Honestly, I have never been so nervous on a golf course. But it was a great experience and it was very nice to speak to him and learn from him. Scottie is very calm, he was joking around a lot. I wasn’t expecting that with him being the World No 1. He asked me a few questions about me college career and told me to just keep believing in myself and to never give up.”

Two weeks on, Barroso Sá has enjoyed a memorable opening two days at Abama Golf making the cut in her LET debut thanks to opening rounds of 70 (-2), 73 (+1). She sits T20 heading into the weekend.

“I’m very grateful for the opportunity,” Barroso Sá said. “Playing this amazing golf course with great views.

“Going into the weekend, I’m very excited. Hopefully I can gets some low rounds in. I’m here with my coach which gives me a lot of confidence. My parents and twin sister are here too. It’s my first LET event, so having them here makes it feel like home. It’s very nice and gives me a lot of confidence.”

As for the future, Barroso Sá has one year left at TCU before she plans to attend LPGA and LET Q-School in the winter.
