An exciting charity fourball match play event will take place prior to the start of the Ladies European Tour’s inaugural La Reserva de Sotogrande Invitational, hosted by Annika Sorenstam, which takes place at La Reserva Club de Sotogrande later this month.
The Challenge will see four big names battle it out as Scotland’s Catriona Matthew, captain of Team Europe in this year’s Solheim Cup, partners Spanish LET player Noemí Jiménez in a match against former European Tour winners Manuel Piñero and Jean Van de Velde.
The event will be played over six holes on Tuesday 14th May, with both men and ladies playing from the same tees. Any tied hole will require a playoff decider to determine its winner.
Every birdie, eagle or hole-in-one will result in a donation to the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC), an association that plays a fundamental role in cancer research as well as supporting patients and their families.
“I’m delighted to play The Challenge and to be in such illustrious company,” said Manuel Piñero, ambassador for La Reserva de Sotogrande. “We will be playing a charity match for show, but whenever you tee off you always feel your fighting spirit returning. In the late 80s I played a few medal-play mixed team events with Marta Figueras-Dotti and it was very enjoyable.
“Bringing a Ladies European Tour event to Sotogrande for the first time is a great honour for us and having the chance to raise money for the AECC rounds off a great tournament,” added the nine-time European Tour winner.
“This event will serve as an unparalleled showcase and we are excited to show off the changes and upgrades we have made at La Reserva de Sotogrande. We are doing our best to make our course one of the best in Europe and we are proud to say that we are reaching our goal.”
The first of three Spanish stops on the 2019 LET international schedule, La Reserva de Sotogrande Invitational will be hosted by Annika Sorenstam, ten-time Major winner and World Golf Hall-of-Famer. This event could prove crucial in deciding Sorenstam’s European team line-up for the Solheim Cup at Gleneagles this September.
La Reserva de Sotogrande Invitational will be supporting the Marbella branch of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC). The AECC will receive the money collected by various fundraising initiatives taking place during the tournament.
The event is sponsored by Sotogrande SA, the founding entity of Sotogrande, and organised by Deporte & Business and the Ladies European Tour. The La Reserva de Sotogrande Invitational will be broadcasted around the world and the Spanish audience will enjoy it live through Movistar Golf, Teledeporte and Andalucía TV.
