LET Rookie Pia Babnik shot the low round of the morning wave at Beroun Golf Club, firing a round of 67 (-5) as she chases a remarkable eighth consecutive professional victory. She is currently in T2 at seven-under-par with the overnight leaders heading out at 2.20pm.
In only her third LET start, the Slovenian prodigy who gained Tour status at the LET Qualifying School last year, is looking to achieve her biggest career victory to date at the Tipsport Czech Ladies Open despite lifting a number of trophies during the last few months.
Competing in mixed field events over the last few months in Slovenia, Germany and the Czech Republic, Babnik shot as low as ten-under-par in one of the tournaments, backing up the promise she showed as an amateur – winning the Girls Amateur Championship and the prestigious Helen Holm trophy before competing in the 2019 PING Junior Solheim Cup.
“It feels amazing, I really just try to play my game and the rest depends on the other players. I played on the Slovenia Tour, a small Tour in Germany and in the Czech Republic and somehow won each event.“
In response to the prospect of winning an unprecedented eight tournaments in a row, the 17-year-old said, “We will see. It is just another round of golf for me. I have just tried to do the same as I have in the amateur days, my Dad is here like always and helping me to calculate the yardage and watch lines on the green so I’ll be looking forward to tomorrow.”
Joining her at seven-under-par for the week is Switzerland’s Kim Metreux, who shot a consistent round of 69. Playing in the group behind her sister, Metreux made the most of scoring conditions on the par five 7th, making an eagle en route to a front nine of 32 strokes. A second year LET player, the 25-year old is looking to better her previous best finish of T24.
“I hit a few shots quite close and made an eagle on the 7th which is quite nice, I’m pleased with the consistency of my game right now. We will have to see what the scores are this afternoon but definitely a good opportunity tomorrow. I have not had many opportunities like this on the LET yet so looking forward to it.”
A real family affair, Kim has her mum on the bag while her sister, Morgane, has her Dad. Talking about the family gathering, the Swiss star said, “Usually it is a bit of a headache of who will be better for who but my Dad had already signed up for my sister so I took my mum. It’s nice to have her here with me and it is nice to share those moments together.”
