Spanish star, Azahara Muñoz, who is ranked 50th in the World Rankings, is set to compete in the Estrella Damm Mediterranean Ladies Open staged at the Terramar Golf Club, in Sitges (Barcelona) April 20 – 23.
Azahara Muñoz and Carlota Ciganda, who both represented Spain at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro last year, will join a strong contingent of Spaniards set to battle it out at the inaugural tournament to be contested at the spectacular Terramar Golf Club.
To further add to the excitement, the 2017 European Solheim Cup Captain, Annika Sorenstam, will be in attendance to watch some of the potential players that will make her team for the match in Des Moines in August.
Malaga-based Azahara will arrive having pipped Beth Allen last year at the final hole to become the first Spanish winner in the history of the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España Femenino, playing virtually in her own back garden.
Azahara, had an impressive amateur record and turned professional in June 2009. Incredibly she won her first tournament on the Ladies European Tour in Spain, at the Madrid Ladies Masters, edging out Swedish star Anna Nordqvist in a playoff. In addition to this, Azahara also won the 2013 and 2014 Lacoste Ladies Open de France, the LPGA Sybase Match Play Championship and represented the European Solheim Cup team at the 2011, 2013 and 2015 matches.
With the presence of Spain’s top two female golfers in this, a Solheim Cup year, the field for the inaugural Estrella Damm Mediterranean Ladies Open is looking incredibly strong.
