Cara Gorlei had a Thursday to remember at the Lacoste Ladies Open de France as she carded her second hole-in-one of the season.
Teeing up in round one at Golf Barriere in Deauville, the South African was one-under par when she reached the par-3 5th on her back nine.
With the wind picking up and a storm incoming, Gorlei flushed a 9-iron which trickled into the hole for her second ace of the season (the first came at the Amundi German Masters in May).
She said: “It was 132 yards playing 140. The wind was slightly down off the right and across. We thought I’d hit a little chippy 9-iron. I hit a perfect little draw and I was just about to tell my caddie I think that’s pretty close, or maybe in, and then a few spectators started cheering! We didn’t see it because it’s quite a big elevation.
“I was trying to count how many I’ve had! I’m pretty it’s six and this is my third one as a professional.“
As for the rest of her round, Gorlei returned to the course after a brief thunder and lightning suspension to card a round of 68 (-3) and sit just two shots behind leaders Bel Wardle, Kirsten Rudgeley and Emma Grechi.
“It was a grind out there with the wind,” the 28-year-old explained. “I enjoy playing with the wind because I feel like I can shape it a lot better. Trusting my shape.
“It was a little scrappy out there. I had a few bogeys which was tough but I made it work and putted well. The greens were very soft so we had to fly the pins a lot more.”
Gorlei’s ace was the ninth recorded by an Ladies European Tour (LET) member on the circuit this season. On top of her two, Bronte Law, Emma Spitz, Leonie Harm, Klara Davidson Spilkova, Tereza Melecka, Ellinor Südow and Jodie Ewart Shadoff recorded the others.
