The second year LET member discusses her Scottish roots and gives us a guide to her home nation ahead of next week’s Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies Scottish Open at Archerfield Links. Where were you born and where is it exactly in the country? I was born in Lanark which is a small town in the central belt of Scotland. Tell us more about where you were born. Lanark is a very scenic town and boasts one of the best courses in the area, Lanark Golf Club. Lanark is close to a town called Carluke where I lived when I was little. What is the best thing about your country? My family all live in Scotland. The people, the scenery, golf courses and… the weather…ok, maybe not the weather 🙂 Give some examples of the traditions from your home town that you like or love doing. We don’t really have too any traditions in my home town. What is your favourite place in Scotland and why? I love Glasgow as I grew up just outside it, I studied at university in Glasgow and I love the Glasgow accent: it’s always nice to land at Glasgow Airport after a few weeks away and hear the Glasgow accent! I also love Nairn where I played the Curtis Cup in 2012 and is where my fiancé lives – the course there is amazing and the beach is incredible. I also love St Andrews – the home of golf 🙂 Name some typical food and drinks from your area that you love. Irn Bru If you like cooking, what typical food from your country do you like to cook? I am a terrible cook unfortunately… Be our travel guide… what places would you recommend us to visit in your country and things to do? St Andrews – the home of golf – is a must do for any golfer. Edinburgh at this time of year is brilliant as there is the Fringe Festival on just now where you can see lots of different acts including some great stand up. Glasgow at Christmas time is always great to see with all the Christmas lights and ice skating at George Square. If you love beaches and golf, Nairn, Dornoch and Carnoustie are your must visit places. When you are not on tour and you are not preparing for any tournament, how would you spend a typical weekend? Spending time with my family, catching up with friends, playing some golf, watching movies. Which is the most popular sport in your country? Football is the most popular sport in Scotland. There are four leagues in Scotland with the Scottish Premiership the top league. The Scottish National Team is also well supported by the ‘Tartan Army’. How popular is golf and women’s golf? Golf is very popular in Scotland as we have some of the greatest golf courses in the world. Women’s golf has definitely become more popular over the years as has junior golf with the introduction of ClubGolf. What are your favourite sports and teams that you support? I support Airdrie Football Club, a local team in the Scottish League One. I used to go to a lot of their games, but I haven’t been for a while. Who is your favourite golf player from your country? And sportsmen/women? Stephen Gallacher – he is a great golfer and he has set up his own foundation to support junior development and give more youngsters the opportunity to play golf and progress with his support. What do you miss from home when you travel? My own bed, my car, home cooking and a good internet connection. What are your favourite “Scottish” sayings? ‘Gonnae no dae that’ which means ‘don’t do that’. And ‘pure dead brilliant’.
