Alfredsson named as Solheim Cup Captain

(Thursday 24th November, 2005 – Halmstad, Sweden) — The Ladies European Tour is delighted to announce that Helen Alfredsson will be the Captain of The 2007 European Solheim Cup Team.

“But really, winning the second match at Dalmahoy was the best feeling. We were beaten so badly in the first one when everything seemed to go wrong from the clothes to the weather, that to turn it around the second time was a very proud moment.

“As a captain, I aim to have a positive attitude, put some great pairings together and above all else, to have fun. The girls know what it’s all about and they’re very competitive; they all want to win just as badly as I do.”

Alfredsson was born in Gothenburg, Sweden and now resides in Orlando, Florida, with her husband Kent Nilsson, a former NHL ice hockey player. She has earned 19 victories worldwide in her 16-year career, including one major championship, at the 1993 Nabisco Dinah Shore. She was an obvious contender for the European Captaincy.

“Helen has all the credentials we were looking for in a Captain,” said Karen Lunn, Chairman of The Ladies European Tour and The European Solheim Cup Committee.

“She has been a great supporter of the Ladies European Tour over the years and is a life member. She is also extremely passionate about The Solheim Cup. She has played in seven Solheim Cups and is a great motivator and a team player.

“She was a very popular and successful captain of the PING Junior Solheim Cup Team and was one of the pioneers of women’s golf in Sweden. She is also a great communicator and is well respected in golf all over the world.”

“We are very pleased with the choice of Helen as Captain of the 2007 Solheim Cup team,” said John Solheim, Chairman and CEO of PING.

“She has a long, successful history with the event and has been a tough matchplay competitor. She has a wonderful personality and all the attributes needed to be a successful Solheim Cup Captain and we look forward to working closely with her over the next two years”.
