A SPECIAL MOMENT FOR MARTIN RETURNING TO SPAIN AS LET WINNER

Marta Martin

Marta Martin won her maiden Ladies European Tour (LET) title at the Tipsport Czech Ladies Open earlier in the year.

The Spanish star gets to return to her homeland this week as an LET winner and play in La Sella Open.

Being able to tee it up at home is always special and Martin is proud to be one of 15 Spanish players in the field this week.

“It feels good,” she said. “I think always playing in your home country is special and playing the only full field event with the biggest money on Tour.

“It’s really good for women’s golf and showing that Spain is really supporting women’s golf all around the world.

“It shows how much the national team is bringing players up and how much they’re investing in the future of sports and taking care of women’s golf.

“I think it’s inspiring for future generations and the ones that are still on Tour, it’s rewarding and inspiring because it makes us work harder to be better and keep inspiring the next generation.”

Martin has had quite the summer of golf since winning her maiden title as she qualified for both Major championships.

The 28-year-old made the cut at both the Amundi Evian Championship and the AIG Women’s Open at St Andrews.

She continued: “It’s become a small dream that came true. Seeing myself with the best players in the world, being part of them and making the cuts at Evian and AIG. Maybe the weekend didn’t go as planned, but it’s a statement for yourself that the work you’re doing is the right work and it keeps pushing you to be better.

“To see you with the top 60 players in the world playing the weekend is inspiring. It was really special playing my first AIG Women’s Open in the home of golf at St Andrews – that is a memory I will never forget.”

Martin will begin her first round from the 10th tee at 3.05 pm (local time) alongside Czechia’s Jana Melichova and France’s Pauline Roussin-Bouchard.

La Sella Golf Resort will provide a different challenge this week for the field of 132 players as it is a fully bermuda golf course and Martin knows being straight from the tee will be important.

She added: “It’s a whole bermuda golf course, so I think not a lot of players are used to this. It’s going to be interesting because there are tricky lies out there on the rough.

“The greens are also bermuda so they’re a little bit different and grain plays an important point on it. Being straight from the tee is going to be an important test and greens are fair, but slopy. If you’re on the fairway and putting well, I think that person is going to win.”
