Ladies European Tour rookie professional Luna Sobrón from Spain was smiling from ear to ear after signing for a women’s course record 62 (-10) in the second round of the Fatima Bint Mubarak Ladies Open on Thursday morning.
The 23-year-old from Mallorca made an eagle, eight birdies and a bogey at the ocean-front Saadiyat Beach Golf Club to end on a total of nine-under-par after 36 holes and place herself in contention. She has already won three professional titles this year, having won two events on the Spanish Santander Tour (Golf Santander Madrid and Pedreña Cantabria), followed by the Castellum Ladies Open in Sweden on the LET Access Series in August.
“It’s a good year and I’m feeling very confident,” said Sobrón, one of the best Spanish amateur golfers of her generation, who was the leading amateur in the 2015 Ricoh Women’s British Open at Turnberry.
“I’m very happy because my putting was good and I had four birdies in a row from the eighth, followed by a birdie, eagle and two more birdies from the 14th. On 18, I hit my second shot into the hospitality at the back of the green, but I made a great chip and putt for par and I was praying that the putt would fall in.
“It will be difficult to repeat this round, but I’m feeling confident and only trying to enjoy the experience.”
Sobrón is coached by her father, Marcos, a golf professional at Puntiro Golf Club in Mallorca and this week her caddie is Jesus Mozo, the brother of fellow Spanish LET member, Belen.
