Thousands of euros have been raised in memory of Ladies European Tour member Cassandra Kirkland, who sadly passed away earlier this year aged 32 following a two-year fight against cancer.
The 2012 Sanya Ladies Open champion, from France, was diagnosed with lung cancer in April 2015, despite never having smoked and having led the lifestyle of a healthy, professional athlete.
For the first round of the Lacoste Ladies Open de France at Golf de Chantaco, competitors were asked to come dressed head to toe in white, the official colour of lung cancer awareness. During the first two rounds on Thursday and Friday, players were given the opportunity to donate €5 per birdie to ARTIC, a French cancer charity close to Cassandra.
A total of 45 players generously donated, including the tournament winner Cristie Kerr, who gave $5,000 US (approximately €4,200). This, combined with the sales from head covers which were specially designed by LET member Sophie Giquel-Bettan, resulted in a grand total of €7,570 being raised.
ARTIC (Association pour la Recherche de Thérapeutiques Innovantes en Cancérologie) is focused on patient-centred clinical research for sick patients, whose needs and interests are placed at the centre of their action. Donations can be made via the charity’s website here.
