Parliament welcomes UK involvement in Solheim Cup

The All-Party Parliamentary Golf Group has wished the European Solheim Cup team well ahead of the forthcoming competition in Iowa, USA.

In a letter to the Captain of Team Europe, Annika Sorenstam, Group Chair Stephen Gethins MP passed on the best wishes of all Members of the Group ahead of the tournament, which begins on 18 August at the Des Moines Golf and Country Club. After a narrow defeat in 2015, Team Europe will be looking to repeat the success of 2013 on US soil when they were victorious 18-10 in Colorado.

Team Europe features five British players: Georgia Hall; Florentyna Parker; Mel Reid; Jodi Eward Shadoff and Charley Hull. Catriona Matthew is an Assistant Captain.  Group Chair and Member of Parliament for North East Fife, Stephen Gethins MP, said “Group Members are looking forward to a thrilling spectacle later this week. In particular, it is great to see that the UK are well represented in Team Europe, and I wish the team all the very best for the tournament.”

“I hope that the tournament will help to promote our game across the UK and inspire more people, and particularly women and girls, to pick up their clubs, take part in physical activity, and keep fit and healthy.”
