Madsen targeting a top 20

Nanna Koerstz Madsen of Denmark is making her first appearance in The Evian Championship this week after making triply sure of her place in the field of 120 competitors.

After finishing second at the European Qualifier with rounds of 72 and 71 on the tournament course at Evian Resort Golf Club assuring her place alongside Russian Maria Verchenova, she then qualified by claiming her maiden LET victory at the Tipsport Golf Masters in Pilsen, Czech Republic.

Now ranked fifth on the LET Order of Merit, the 21-year-old from Smoerum had a third route to qualifying and she recently demonstrated the extent of her talents when she tied for 13th in the Olympic golf competition in Rio.

Speaking from the Academy driving range in the Evian Resort, Madsen referred to her Olympic experience. “It has given me some confidence because you are playing with some of the same people there as here and it’s always nice to see that you can compete with the best. That’s given me a lot of confidence for this tournament as well.

“I have a really good impression of the Evian. It’s a huge set-up and amazing to be here. I’m excited to play this week. I wouldn’t say I’m on my A game. Maybe my B game.

“I have today to practise and I got some good practise in yesterday so hopefully I’ll be ready.  I like the course and I think it fits me okay. Hopefully I can have some good scores and get a good result. I don’t have any expectations of winning the tournament but I would be happy with a top 20.”

Madsen’s best finish in a Major was 21st at the 2015 Ricoh Women’s British Open at Turnberry where she equalled the course record with a seven-under-par 65 in the final round.
