During the ISPS HANDA Ladies European Masters, the LET invited Kirsty O’Connor from the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) to help to develop a personalised dual career advice programme service for LET members. TASS met with rookies and other members of the LET who completed a survey that will help the LET to identify the education and training required to help players to develop a dual career or prepare for a second career.
TASS already advises the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on the development of its Education Section for their Athlete Career Programme (ACP) and the LET players welcomed the opportunity to extend their skillsets.
LET Director of Development and Membership Mike Round commented: “Of course we want our members to have long and successful playing careers, but studies into professional sportspeople suggest that investing in personal development whilst playing gives a more balanced life, can improve performance, helps to avoid mental health problems and prepares individuals for when their playing careers come to an end.
“In addition to the research being carried out by TASS, through its membership of the Professional Players’ Federation, the LET is learning about the education services and opportunities available to professional athletes in other sports. As part of the LET’s development strategy, the aim is to develop and deliver an advice service for LET members which would be a personalised so that it provides relevant advice that matches the needs and aspirations of the player.”
This is the second phase of the LET’s career planning service, which was launched in February in consultation with global golf recruitment company Colt Mackenzie McNair.
