Sanchez and Monke lead on day one in Hungary

Anja Monke

“Yesterday, after the pro-am I was really struggling with my driver, so I spent a lot of time on the range, and I decided to play the course a little more defensively. I decided not to take a driver on every hole so I could avoid the water on the right side, because my tendency was nice, high and right!

“I actually got around quite nicely using that defensive strategy on this golf course. I also made some awesome putts. I mean; they went in from all over the place. So that was nice, I enjoyed it.”

Sara Beautell, who lay in third position, carded the lowest round in a six-year career with the Ladies European Tour and she said: “I played pretty good. I had an eagle on number three where I played a nine-iron in and I had seven birdies, one double bogey and one bogey. I putted really well and made some great approach shots. I’m very happy because I finally had a good round. It’s my first good one of the year!”

Beautell is no stranger to playing in hot conditions and she added: “I like playing in the heat. The golf course is in great condition. Tomorrow we’ll see what happens. It would be nice to be up there and in with a chance in the final round. It’s been a long time.”
