Day one of the Pacific Bay Resort Australian Ladies Classic – Bonville started pretty well for local favourite Sarah Kemp with a birdie on the ninth hole and it finished in similar style with a late birdie on the eighth to close out a 1-under round of 71.

Kemp, the feel good story of the summer in Australian women’s golf after a career changing fortnight, was out early in conditions that were far from ideal for golf.

Having secured her 2018 and 2019 playing rights on the LPGA Tour with back to back high finishes at the Vic Open and Australian Women’s Open, Kemp was feeling confident coming into this week.

A birdie at the last hole saw her finish in red figures, an outcome she later revealed was her goal at the start of the day.

“I didn’t do a proper warm-up because it (the rain) was coming down pretty good,” she said of the awkward weather which persisted throughout the morning.

“It was kind of that annoying rain where you have to put your jacket on then take your jacket off then put it on again.

“But my goal was to finish under par for the day. Considering the conditions, I thought if I shoot under par I’m not going to be too far away.”
