The PING Junior Solheim Cup will start again on Tuesday with the result of the foursomes still to be decided after bad weather disrupted play at St Leon-Rot.
Two strong sides from Europe and the USA tied the morning fourballs 3-3 but thunder and lightning caused play to be suspended for an hour and a half during the afternoon and that in turn meant bad light brought play to a halt with three games left out on the course.
This year’s match goes into the final day with the visiting American team holding a slender one point lead at 5-4 after Mariel Galdiano and Haley Moore scored a decisive 6 & 5 victory over Sweden’s Elin Esborn and Norway’s Sandra Nordaas and compatriots Nelly Korda and Megan Khang followed that up with a 2 & 1 win over Swizerland’s Albane Valenzuela and France’s Mathilda Cappeliez
Austria’s Emma Spitz and Ireland’s Olivia Mehaffey did pull one point back for the European team with a 3 & 2 victory over Mika Liu and Hailee Cooper but the Americans have the advantage in the three game to be completed in the morning.
When darkness fell Angel Yin and Hannah O’Sullivan were one up on Germany’s Leonie Harm and her Danish partner Puk Lyng Thomsen through 15 holes. Andrea Lee and Sierra Brooks were two up on Spain’s Agathe Laisne and Spain’s Ana Pelaez after 14 holes while Kristen Gillman and Kaitlyn Papp were two up on Spain’s Marta Perez Sanmartin and Maria Parra at the same stage in the round.
“It has been a tough day but a good day,” said US captain JoAnne Carner. “There have been a lot of birdies by both sides but we’ve got the edge which is great.
“I thought the bad weather might favour the Europeans bu my team have played very well and I’m just hoping we can do the same tomorrow. That’s the plan but it’s so close either side could win. It’s very much up in the air.”
“The conditions were very tricky out there,” confirmed European Vice-Captain Sebastian Rühl. “Sometimes you get a bit of momentum out of a suspension but today I think it worked in favour of the Americans. But after the break I did feel we were getting it back a bit. Leonie Harm and Puk Lyng Thomsen fought back to only one down and the two Spaniards are just one behind as well so we’ve still got everything to play for.
“It’s still pretty much open and we feel we can get the girls in the right mood to fight back tomorrow. If we can get the attitude right anything can happen.”
Tournament organisers have indicated that play will resume at 7.30 in the morning with the singles scheduled to start as close as possible to the published time of 8.00 o’clock.
