Angkor Golf Resort in Cambodia is ready to host the Ladies European Tour’s (LET) Lalla Aicha Tour School Pre-Qualifying event next month, according to PGA Head Professional Alan Martin.
Last year, the Ladies European Tour (LET) added a new Lalla Aicha Tour School event to the schedule at Angkor Golf Resort, Cambodia, providing an exciting new destination for golfers from Asia and around the world to compete and the opportunity to progress to the final stage in Marrakech, Morocco.
This year’s event will take place on October 18-21, 2017, over four rounds on the award-winning par 72, 7,279-yard championship golf course designed by European legend, Sir Nick Faldo, which is conveniently located five minutes from Siem Reap International Airport and 10 minutes from the famous Angkor Wat temple. Cambodia has a budding golf tourism market and this event will showcase the world class facilities of Angkor Golf Resort, which has received a huge raft of accolades since opening in 2008. The resort hosted the Handa Faldo Cambodian Classic on the men’s Asian Tour in 2012.
In October 2016, (year one of the tournament in Cambodia), players from six different countries competed and six players secured their spots at the Final Qualifying Stage in Morocco. It was Yan Liu (China) who led the qualifiers with an impressive total of 268 (-20), which included a new course record 63 (-9) in round three. She collected a winner’s cheque for US$1000. Liu then proceeded to qualify for full LET status after another solid performance in Morocco, finishing T-25th at the Final Stage.
“Since it was my first pre-qualifying experience, I hoped to pass first time and I’m so glad that I made it!” said Liu, adding: “I remember each hole at Angkor Wat Golf Club – and the lunch was delicious! Because I really liked the course, it made me enjoy the game a lot more. Angkor Wat golf course is excellent quality. The fairways make it easy to take a nice strike to the green and hit the ball close to the pin. A 63 was not my lowest score, as I shot 61 once in a tournament as a teenager. However, having 20-under in a four-day period was my lowest total score.
“I like the food in Cambodia, and the official hotel was nice. I toured Cambodia during that week, I went to the local store and Angkor Wat, went downtown and toured the whole city by taking a carriage.
Cambodia is a historical country, and the local people are nice. After I went back to China, I told a lot of friends about where they could go to play golf and what they could do in Cambodia.”
