It has been some week for Diksha Dagar who tees up in the Ladies European Tour (LET) season finale days on from winning a Gold Medal at the 2025 Deaflympics in Tokyo.
The Indian successfully defended her crown in the third edition of the Games securing a 14-shot victory at Wakasu Golf Links.
Dagar is now beaming with pride as she looks to keep the golden momentum going at this week’s Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España presented by Oysho.
“It was wonderful,” the 24-year-old said. “It’s always an honour to be there playing and to be able to defend my Gold medal. The weather was very cold and I was shaking a bit! But I was very well prepared for it. It was all thanks to my putting. Also I reached a lot of the par-5s in two which made it much easier to score.
“When I won the gold medal, I got to experience a beautiful thing standing on the podium with my anthem playing and the national flag raised high. It was amazing. I’m very proud. Whether it’s the normal Olympics or the Deaflympics, it’s an honour playing for your country. The competition is always fun.”
Hearing impaired since birth, and now wearing hearing aids having learned to read lips from an early age, Dagar is a trailblazer for deaf sport in India and remains the only golfer to compete in both the Deaflympics and Olympic Games.
“The competition was much better than last time,” Dagar continued, who also won Silver in 2017 and Gold in 2021. “I’m so happy that lots of girls are coming forward and taking part in the Deaflympics. It was amazing and I’m so happy.
“I think there’s a lot of potential in the other deaf girls competing. I played with Margaux Brejo from France, she’s a great player and I’m sure in a couple of years she will also be on a professional tour. Another girl from Canada, Erica Dawn Rivard, I was very impressed with her game. On the final day she shot three-under and got a medal. It’s great.”
As for this week, Dagar, a two-time winner on the LET, is competing in the final event of the 2025 season alongside 74 other players. The Indian currently sits 23rd in the Order of Merit but has not had a top-10 since the Amundi German Masters back in June.
“This season I started really well,” Dagar said, who finished runner-up in the season-opening Lalla Meryem Cup. “I was very satisfied. For the first time I also made back-to-back cuts at the Scottish Open and British Open which I was very happy win. But after that, I started struggling a bit. But that’s ok, that’s how golf is. It was a little disappointing because I wish I kept up the good form. I’m struggling to find form again.
“I played some good golf on this course last year, but I would say expectations are quite low. I don’t want to jinx it. There is confidence after winning the gold but it’s all a process. You never know.”
Dagar gets underway at Real Guadalhorce Club de Golf at 11:10am on Thursday playing alongside Germany’s Laura Fuenfstueck and USA’s Brianna Navarrosa.
