HISTORY-MAKER BRIEM READY TO TEST HER GAME AGAIN ON THE LET

Helen Briem

At the start of the summer, Helen Briem came very close to winning her maiden title on the Ladies European Tour (LET).

The German teenager was still an amateur at the time and produced a final round of 64 at the Dormy Open Helsingborg to set the clubhouse lead.

Briem was eventually joined by France’s Perrine Delacour on 11-under-par and the duo played in a playoff for the win which went Delacour’s way.

The then 18-year-old headed to the LET Access Series (LETAS) winning each of her first three tournaments – the Montauban Ladies Open, Amundi Czech Ladies Challenge and Santander Golf Tour – Avila.

Briem headed to the European Ladies’ Team Championship with Germany where the team were victorious, and she rose to number one in the World Amateur Golf Rankings.

After achieving everything she could as an amateur, the teenager turned professional at the end of July and headed back to LETAS.

After finishing in a tie for fourth place at the Ladies Slovak Golf Open, Briem then won her fourth tournament of the year at the Rose Ladies Open.

With that finish, the German star has all but secured her LET card for 2025 as she sits second place in the LETAS Order of Merit with 2,162.50 points and crucially 875.64 points ahead of third place.

“It was great,” she said. “I had my mum on the bag that week which is something that happens once in a year. It was great to get my fourth win and to secure my card for the LET next year. The job is done.

“I played two LET events earlier this year and my good results on LETAS gave me the possibility to try and get LET invites and not play LETAS because I don’t have to. It’s great to get an opportunity to play at such a high-level event.”

Briem is one of the 132 players in the field this week at La Sella Open and is looking forward to testing her game again.

The German will be playing in the first round alongside Slovenia’s Pia Babnik and Thailand’s Trichat Cheenglab with the trio teeing off at 10.09 am (local time).

Though the bermuda golf course will provide a different challenge, Briem is hoping her high clubhead speed will help her this week.

She continued: “The front and the back nine are really different. I think the back nine is more difficult especially those holes across the street. I think it’s a good challenge.

“I will try to stay out of the rough, but I have a bit of an advantage because I have high clubhead speed, so it doesn’t bother me that much. It’s definitely better to stay out of the rough!

“The greens are not what I’m used to. If you’re not used to certain things, it’s always difficult, but I will try to figure out and see how it goes. As always, the aim is to play good, have fun and see where we end up this week. I will play day for day, shot for shot.”
