Georgia Hall loves playing at the AIG Women’s Open. It is a tournament where the Englishwoman thrives, and she is excited to be back for the 2022 edition at Muirfield.
Back in 2018 was when Hall made her Major breakthrough winning this Championship at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club, while she finished as runner-up in Carnoustie last year.
Playing at home is something players cherish and the Solheim Cup stalwart loves going back to her roots and competing on links courses.
“I couldn’t come into a tournament with more confidence than this one for sure,” said Hall, who is ninth in the 2022 Race to Costa del Sol. “Playing at home in front of home crowds and having a lot of people here that I’m close to as well.
“Playing this type of course suits me very well. I don’t get to play it much only twice a year, so I’m really excited and I just really enjoy it more than anything because I’m at home.
“It was the best moment in my career and my aim is always to win as many of these AIG Women’s Opens as possible, especially on big championship courses like this win one. It’s my highlight of the year playing this event, so I always have a lot of confidence going in, and I really enjoy the week.”
The English star will begin her first round at 7.58am local time alongside Korea’s In Gee Chun and American Jessica Korda.
And Hall, who is number 27 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings, wasn’t sure what to expect heading into the week but was pleased with what she’s seen at Muirfield.
“This is the type of golf course that can be very, very tricky in places,” she continued. “It’s very sneakily tricky. Off the tees, it looks quite easy, but when you get close to the green off the pot bunkers it can be quite hard.
“I didn’t really know what to expect coming here, as I had never been here before. It was super windy today, so I really got to play the course as hopefully it will be the next few days. It is in really good condition and there are definitely some tricky holes out there, so looking forward to playing tomorrow.”
Hall has an impeccable record at the AIG Women’s Open in the last five editions with a combined score of 34-under-par.
And with it being the first time the Championship has been played at Muirfield, the 26-year-old believes everyone is vying for the title.
She added: “For the last five years I have finished in first place, second place and third place. I’m obviously very confident with last year and losing by one, I had a great final round. I don’t feel much pressure in this event.
“I just feel very happy to be playing at home, and I just try and take advantage as much as I can. When I walk on the first tee tomorrow, I’m sure there will be lots of people watching and I’m just really happy to get that support from my home crowd and really appreciate it.
“I think everyone wants to win here, especially because it the first women’s professional event that we are playing in. It would definitely a good one to win this year, especially.”
