PING JUNIOR SOLHEIM CUP TEAMS TIE MORNING FOURBALLS

The 2021 PING Junior Solheim Cup started with six fourball matches on the morning of Wednesday September 1 and the six points on offer were shared equally between Team Europe and Team USA.

The best U18 female amateurs from Europe and the USA went head-to-head for the first time at Sylvania Country Club in Toldeo, Ohio.

Team Europe secured the first two points as Denisa Vodičková (Czech Republic) and Francesca Fiorellini (Italy) beat the USA’s Kaitlyn Schroeder and Bailey Shoemaker 4&3.

While Helen Briem (Germany) and Savannah De Bock (Belgium) defeated Avery Zweig and Sara Im 5&3.

Swedish duo Meja Örtengren and Nora Sundberg secured the third point for Team Europe as they won on the 17^th hole over Americans Alexa Pano and Katie Li, 2&1.

The European players showed a high level of competitiveness and great attitude all the way to the last hole.

In very tight matches, the earliest a European team lost was on the 17^th hole and Captain Annika Sörenstam was proud of her team.

“We saw some really good golf in the morning, the course was a bit more difficult with the wind. I am very proud of the European girls and how they fought until the end. I think to be all square after the morning matches is definitely a good thing,” she said.

“I think the girls are all fired up again for the afternoon foursomes. They know it’s all about the attitude. Keep smiling, keep going, keep fighting. I saw so many great shots already, some great driving which isn’t usually considered as highlights but it’s still very impressive. Francesca [Fiorellini] birdied holes 9, 10, 11 and 13 which was really good, we have a lot to look forward to in the afternoon.”
